We had a Windows file get corrupted and are attempting to repair
it with our XP Pro OS disk, but for some reason it gets 'stuck' while
in the "Searching for previous versions of Windows" mode...

It just SITS in that mode for more than an hour, and we can even
take OUT the disk from the CD-ROM during this mode (which is
strange)...

Is this normal?...we don't think so...why is this happening?
Any tips on bypassing or correcting this problem?

What you are actually doing is installing Windows XP. Since you have the
upgrade version, the installer needs to check that you qualify for an
upgrade, which it does by checking for a previous version of Windows.
Usually at this point the user inserts the installation disk for their
previous version of Windows.

If you need to repair a corrupted Windows file, the way to do it is to
extract a fresh copy, either from a folder within c:\windows or your Windows
CD. Post back with the name of the file you need to extract for more
specific instructions.

Right..the file is a "SYSTEM32/CONFIG" file....
Every time we startup, the screen tells us that this file is
either missing or corrupt and that we CAN repair it using the OS disk..

So HOW is this done?...and again, is it NORMAL for the OS disk
during setup/repair to go into the "search for previous windows" mode
in taking MORE than an hour to perform??

I'm a little confused here

We didn't have SYSTEM RESTORE "ON"...and we can't even get INTO the
files until
we insert the OS DISK and click either REPAIR or SETUP...

....In which it performs a mode where it "searches for previous Windows
files"...that
takes MORE than an hour...

I want to know if this "HOUR" wait id normal or not!! If so, we will
simply go thru the
process of re-installing XP....If NOT, why?..

Thanks
