My XP Pro randomly reboots itself. The only other thing possibly wrong
I have noticed is it takes an age to shutdown when I shut it down the
proper way. The reboots are becoming more frequent. It's not a
virus/trojan as as have thoroughly scanned my machine. I installed xp
over the top of win 98 about six weeks ago and all was fine for a few
weeks. I'm all updated with service packs etc. Could it be anything
to do with xp's "services" as I have disabled a few on recommendation

You should never install windows OVER windows. Otherwise, you end up with
neverending headaches. HOWEVER, I think for your current problem, the OS
upgrade is a red herring. The symptom you describe is most often caused by
a failing power supply. Before you buy a new power supply though, try
installing xp on a freshly nt-formatted hard drive. -Dave

Did you upgrade your RAM before installing XP? I ask because I've had
rebooting problems do to a bad stick.

Install MBM5 to monitor voltages etc. You've scanned for viruses - are your
definitions up to date? No point if they're 2 years old (like some people
I've helped before). Download / update and run adaware also - amazing how
much crap that removes.

Right click My Computer, choose properties. Go to the advanced tab.
Startup and recovery settings. UNCHECK automatically restart. Use the
additional information to troubleshoot.

I have 384MB of RAM, it was working fine before.
MBM5 is not compatible with my machine. Hardware monitor don't seem to
work either.
Virus defs up to date and full scan done.
Adaware comes up clean.
:(
