XP PRO RAM USAGE

I have a gig of RAM, but I've never seen available RAM go below 700mb.
What can I do to use more of this "wasted" RAM ??

Use more memory intensive applications.

Not much, other than use programs that need lots and lots of memory, such as
almost any photo editing program.

Run more memory-hungry applications. It depends on what apps you run, but
1GB is considerably more than most people running Windows XP can make
effective use of.

Bummer. I bought this system from a builder friend. It's a "gaming" setup,
and wouldn't you know it, I don't play games, but it was all he had on hand
at the time. Appreciate your help.

You could take the attitude that it is better to have too much RAM than not
enough.

Use programs that need more RAM :)

That's good; count your blessings. It simply means that whenever you look
at it, 700 is the case. It'll climb during appications running and gets
more use as more apps run at hte same time.
It also means you won't be making heavy use of a pagefile, which in turn
means things will be running faster in general for you.
That's a good figure! You'll probably have a use for it eventually.

I was hoping there was some way to put more of the OS in RAM, but I
suppose Windows takes all it wants anyway.
NO, I will not buy a bunch of memory hungry programs just to use more RAM.
You guys slay me sometimes !!!

Yup, it sure will. In fact, it puts a lot of stuff there "in anticipation"
of your wanting to use it, too. Windows keeps track of what's going on and
does its best to guess at what you might logically do next, and puts that
into RAM just in case you might need it.

You haven't mentioned -how- you're watching RAM usage, but if it's only
while the computer is idling with nothing to do, it's highly likely to
change dynamically as you use the computer and then return to a low number
used when it's done.

How/when are you monitoring RAM usage? It's possible you're not seeing
"true" usage numbers but only a subset of what's really being used.
It'd be interesting to see what your pagefile is doing, too. In theory
it should be getting very little use.
