XP Pro Problem with Client for MS Networks and File/Printer Sharing

This is my second request in the hopes someone can help. I have a network of three computers: 2 are WIN 98 SE and one is WIN XP Pro. The laptop with WIN XP Pro has internal wireless connectivity and the laptop with 98 SE has a PCMCIA card installed. The Win 98 SE desktop is hard-wired via CAT 5e cable to the Netgear WGT624 router and Toshiba cable modem. I was able to successfully get the network set up with both laptops using wireless and the desktop using wired. Each machine sees the other and they have shared files and folders without any problems.

Because I have several large folders that I want to share with the WIN XP Pro laptop I decided to take advantage of its built-in ethernet connection, so got another CAT5e cable and stuck one end into a free port on the router and the other end into the ethernet port on the machine (after turning off the wireless internal modem). No problem immediately accessing the internet, but I cannot access the network itself nor can any of the machines see the XP Pro laptop. In this machine when I go to My Network Neighborhood I do not get anything, just a blank screen. I fiddled with this for a while, ran the wizard a few times, to no avail. I set "Enable NetBIOS over TC/IP" and that made no difference. I looked at the properties for the wired adapter and noticed that the Client for MS Network box and the File and Printer Sharing box were both unchecked. Oh, a simple problem....? I checked each of those boxes and received a warning that to do so would DISable each of those functions. Huh? I went ahead and tried it anyway. It didn't "take," and the boxes were unchecked again the next time I looked after rebooting. I then took out the ethernet cable and fired up the wireless modem so that I could see how it was configured. The two boxes ARE checkmarked there. So what's the deal here? Why are they checked in the wireless function and NOT with the ethernet adapter? How can I resolve this? If they are in fact enabled, the way that message is suggesting, then why is the machine behaving as though they were disabled?

Please, someone help me with this.

Uninstall the wired network adapters, reboot, and let XP reinstall it.

Thank you, Ken! A friend also had suggested this and so
this evening I implemented it and by gum, it did the
trick. Thanks so much!

Thank you, Ken! That took care of the problem very
nicely! I am really relieved. Something so simple...
