Upgrading an existing XP install to Vista.

I know most people here can do it without a problem, however most people who
use computers and know very little will probably run into problems.

As I understand it, the voucher is an upgrade so, according to the licence, you couldn't use
the XP on one machine and Vista on another (unless of course the machine you put Vista on
already had an XP licence IYSWIM.

Yup...that's what I was wondering...I need Pro for a laptop I've just "upgraded" so I figured I
could use the Vista upgrade on a new Dell I purchased a couple of months ago?

Someone else asked a similar question after the purchase.
After reading the fine print, not available on the website, it was
discovered specific details of the new computer purchased with the Vista
coupon were required.
It is possible that the coupon is worthless to the buyer.
It will be interesting to see if buyers of these are able to get Vista from
Microsoft.
I doubt it is possible, without lying that is.

Email Newegg back and ask for details.
That way if you have problems, you may be able to get your $ back from
Newegg.

Make sure you do what I did not do and read the upgrade coupon and the FAQ's
at Newegg. After I purchased Media Center w/upgrade I found out everything
states "when you purchase with qualifying PC".

Thanks...I need a "full" version of XP Pro anyway so I figured a Vista upgrade could only be a
bonus!!

I think Microsoft is allowing certain retailers to do the upgrade as well as
per the news release when the RTM was released last week..

I've got a question.

I currently already own a copy of XP Pro OEM installed on my machine. (but
not with the coupon)

Say I buy the XP Pro OEM with the Vista Coupon and then when it comes to
january I then get Vista (Business). Is it possible to install Vista to a
seperate partition or does it REQUIRE that it is installed on top of the
current XP installation?

I'd personally prefer to have XP and Vista installed next to each other on
the same RAID0 setup in a partition for each.

Thanks

Mark

Well, technically, if you have an upgrade coupon or
buy a Vista upgrade, you can no longer use the prior
OS you are upgrading- it is not supposed to be installed
on another machine or separate partition.

Ah, but that's it..

If I buy XP Pro OEM with a coupon then I will have two copies of XP Pro. One
of which will be bought specifically for Vista Business.

In the past with upgrade versions of windows you could simply install 2000
or XP (can't remember with older versions) cleanly onto a seperate partition
(or fully onto the hard drive) and all you'd need to do would provide it
with an older windows cd when it asks you. (as proof that it's legit)

I really don't want to have Vista only on my pc, chances are there'll be
lots of issues plus from my brief playaround experience with the beta &
release candidates there will be performance hits on some memory hungry
games like Battlefield 2 etc.

Technically this is true. But the only way to enforce it would be for Vista
to require an activated XP installation with valid key in order to use an
upgrade DVD. Obviously this can't be enforced as a re-install would not be
possible (once the XP install is gone there would be no way to recover it,
rendering the Upgrade DVD useless)
