XP Pro/Norton Internet Security Conflict?

D

Dave

I have a 3.0GHz Pentium 4, 512Mb RAM running Windows XP
Professional. This is on a network at work.
I purchased and installed Norton Internet Security 2005,
after my trial of Norton Antivirus expired.
I used all the default prompts on installation. When it
was finished, I rebooted and could not access any of my
network drives. I added the subnet of my network to the
Norton Firewall, and that solved that problem.
But now, when I try to shut the computer off, it hangs on
the "Windows is now shutting down" screen. I have waited
up to 6 minutes for it to finish shutting down, and always
have to end up holding the power button in.
Is this a known conflict with Norton? I do not have XP's
firewall on, so that is not conflicting.
Thanks in advance!

Dave

Seen this! It may be due to the "AntiVirus" part of NIS 2005. AntiVirus is
set to "Scan Floppy Drive" at Shutdown and with Norton AntiVirus this causes
this problem. NAV is part of NIS (Norton Internet Security).

Norton Internet Security is a Home based product, not intended for use
on a "Company Network". You didn't mention details about the Network
whether it's domain based, etc - So it's hard to know your exact situation.

About your specific issue(s). It's likely that one of the Symantec services
(and there are allot of them 40+ Megabytes worth), that may be hanging.
You should check the System/Application event logs and look for errors
pertaining to NIS/Symantec.

Also make sure you've run Live Update re-iteratively, Many times you'll
have to download a set of updates, reboot and then do Live Update again.

I used to use/recommend Symantec-NIS, but after all manner of issues
with subscriptions/updates, etc I finally pulled the plug. The product is
notoriously resource hungry, expensive and in some cases does not detect
and remove viruses that other less expensive solutions will. Already in
2005, I've migrated 20+ customers off Symantec and to alternate vendor
products - 100% of them have had positive feedback and not a single one
has asked to return to Symantec Security products.

Dave,

Dump NIS. I used to use it, but after encountering performance problems
(among other things), I removed the product. In fact, I ended up
reformatting to remove ALL remnants of NIS2005, since it places itself all
over the HDD. Anyways, check alt.com.anti-virus newsgroup for
recommendations on other suites. I was a long time supporter of
Norton/Symantec, but unfortunately, they're latest products are
disappointing. I heard of similar problems with McAfee, although I've not
personally used McAfee.

For Anti-Virus get a 1-Year free of CA's eTrust. It comes from the
Microsoft Partner Pack. The version is a little out of date, but once
installed you can upgrade for free to the latest. You'll need to Register
on eTrust's web-site. The program has a small system footprint, a
very good daily update and scheduled system scans.

For Firewall either Zone Alarm Free or Sygate Personal Firewall,
also free.

Partner Pack download page, found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/partnerpack/default.aspx?prereq=true
Look under the "Protect" category.

Thanks, CA's used to put out CA-Superproject a project management software
package, I did not know that they had opted-out of that market. I'll check
out their AV software

Anyone else using CA's stuff?
