I have a small business that runs 5 computers on a shared
network using a DLink 7 port hub, and the to the internet
through a DLink router after that. Here's the problem, I
can access the internet just fine, the file shareing
computer is running W2K, as is 2 of the others and one
running W98. I need to run multiple operating systems
for software developement. I have just added the xp
machine for troubleshooting purposes. The xp machine can
rarely access any files on my W2K server, I have edited
the W2K registry with the size required buffer value,
I've also disabled indexing services via deleting the Reg
key as has also been suggested. XP is so stupid even
exploring a shared file on the xp machine through the
network - workgroup -my shared folder can take up to 2
minutes to view, and thats on my own computer!!! Any
ideas on network settings would be helpful otherwise I
just may have to drop product support for XP as this is
unbelievable!

Well, your explanation just doesn't help much at all. First off with a W2K
machine and an XP machine, you need to make sure PERMISSIONS are granted
either end. The BEST way to ensure that the least amount of those sorts of
problems occur is to A) Have the same user with Admin rights and same
password on each machine OR B) Activate the guest account on the XP machine
so as to stop troubles it's end. In your case, do both.

Secondly, networking with XP set on auto assign IS slow to get XP to
recognise the network. As you didn't say it is auto assigned IP numbers, I
am assuming it IS set that way. Change all machines to MANUALLY assigned IP
numbers and you will be a LOT happier.

Thirdly, on the XP machine when set up, Windows ALWAYS sets the page file
(virtual memory) far too low to 383megs. Check if this is the case on the XP
machine, set it to higher (depending on your need here but start at 768megs
as the LOWEST assigned and choose your best guess for the highest) and
reboot.

Lastly, you would do yourself a LOT of good if you make sure your XP and W2K
machines have had Diskclean run on them and all garbage you can get out IS
out and that both C drives are defragged.
