I've been experiencing lockups when my laptop running
Windows XP is idle. I've been getting a message in the
error log about the catalog index being corrupted. What
could be going on? Any help is appreciated.

Do you have a website? If yes, this is a reference to the application
involved in either uploading or storing your files I believe.

If no, we'll need more information about this error and the precise wording
and references.

It's possible the lockups are related to the above, if not, try the
following:
First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

If your system is clear of viruses, open Control Panel, open System, go to
the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, remove the
check from "Automatically Restart" under System Failure. This will cause
the system to blue screen instead of restarting on errors and the
information on the blue screen may give a clue as to the source of the
issue.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors corresponding to the crash, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. No not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

No, I don't have a website. The exact wording of the
message is as follows:

Content index on c:\system volume information \catalog.wci
is corrupt. Please shutdown and restart the indexing
service (cisvc). I believe this is error message # 4126.

The next message states the following:

Cleaning up corrupt content index metadata on c:\system
volume information \catalog.wci. Index will be
automatically restored by refiltering all documents.

It sounds like a hard drive issue, but I've done several
diagnostics on the drive and no bad sectors show up.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

System Volume Information is the location of the System Restore data store.
It sounds as though the data store is corrupted. Try turning off System
Restore and then turning it back on as follows.

Open Control Panel, open System, go to the System Restore tab, place a check
next to turn off System Restore on all drives, click apply and ok. Reboot
the system, return to the same place, remove the check, click apply and ok,
reboot the system and see if this resolves the issue.
