Hello,

I am running Windows XP Pro and have SP2 installed. This is running on a
Dell P4, that has a 40Gb HD and 1Gb of RAM. The computer is about 1 year
old.

Problem is as follows. When using primarily the internet, the internet and
all system functions will lock up with absolutely no activity. If I have
another application running, Excel, Solidworks, Word, I can still use those
apps with typically no problem, but any calls to the system to start other
apps, Task Manager, etc, are also locked. After a long pause, 5-10 minutes,
all will free up and typically run okay.

Does this sound familiar, is there some simple something that I can do to
fix/diagnose the problem? It is driving me crazy and is driving my wife
even more crazy - vicious circle.

Thanks in advance for your help.

First, what is the malware status of the computer? Be sure it is clean:

If the computer is clean, then there are a few more troubleshooting
steps to try:

1. As always, first ask yourself - what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't? Add any hardware, software, update any
drivers?

2. If you updated your modem or ethernet adapter (NIC) drivers, roll
them back: How to Roll Back a Device Driver - http://tinyurl.com/86yb6

3. Look at hardware. Since we don't know how you get to the Internet -
check all cables/phone cords and swap them out with known-working ones.
Do the same for the NIC or modem.

Post back with results of your troubleshooting and details for more
help.
