I have a Toshiba Satellite 1805. It originally had
Windows XP home but for business purposes I had to
install Windows Server 2000. Now, I am at a new job and
would like to go back to XP. I backed everything up
first, then I used my Toshiba Manufacturer CDs to try to
re-install back to the original settings. Well, Disk 1
is damaged BUT that is not my problem. I have a 120 day
trial version of XP Professional (I am on the road) and I
have a licensed XP Pro version waiting for me when I get
back to the office. However, I cannot get XP Pro 120 Day
demo installed. Period. I have made a boot disk and
reformatted the hard drive, removing all partitions with
fdisk. The HD is 20 gigs. On the first attempt at
installation, everything seems fine until the screen
reads "Starting Windows" then my laptop shuts down!
Completely shuts down! After that when I try to run
setup, when XP gets to the screen to press [ENTER] to
continue, the laptop shuts down before I cane even make a
response. I have once again reformatted but I've been
down this road before. THE HD is not returning any bad
sectors. Any ideas would be appreciated cuz right now
I'm stuck in the water... Thanks!

Have you tried running setup by booting from the XP CD as follows:
Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.
