I am installing xp pro into a new HD. I get an error message " can not copy
file spnike.dll". Please help!

Typically when files won't install during setup it is due to a hardware
issue. It could be a scratched CD or a dirty CD-Rom drive. Try cleaning the
drive or inspect the CD for damage. In many cases though flaky RAM is the
problem. Try reseating your RAM modules. If you have more than one try
removing a stick and swap it out if the problem persists.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On very
rare occasions the installation CD is the problem.

Since the most recent change to your system is the hard drive, you
should download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's
web site, and test the new drive. Unfortunately, even new devices can
sometimes fail, right out of the box; particularly if improperly handled
in shipping, in the store prior to purchase, or even on the way home
from the store.

I followed your instruction and even put a new dvd r disc. Now I am getting
a message can not copy rio8drv.sys. Do I need to change the HD as well?

As Bruce Chambers told you, failure to install the operating system
usually means hardware problems. If your optical drive is not the
culprit, look to the RAM and then to the hard drive.

1) Test the RAM - I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously, you
have to get the program from a working machine. You will either
download the precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or
the .iso to make a bootable cd. If you want to use the latter, you'll
need to have third-party burning software on the machine where you
download the file - XP's built-in burning capability won't do the job.
In either case, boot with the media you made. The test will run
immediately. Let the test run for an hour or two - unless errors are
seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.

2) Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the mftr. Download
the file and make a bootable floppy or cd with it. Boot with the media
and do a thorough test. If the drive has physical errors, replace it.
