I've read all the MS stuff on how much memory XP needs. You got 64MB
minimum (if you want WinME levels of performance!) and 128MB or more
recommended.

Let's talk reality though. If you had to recommend to somebody buying a PC
a level of memory they would be happy with from a performance standpoint,
what would it be? Where's that knee on the curve?

A. 64MB
B. 128MB
C. 256MB
D. 512MB
E. 1024MB
..

..

I'd say 256 would be the minimum, and would be acceptable for someone who is
extremely concerned about budget and isn't going to do much except word
processing and email and basic business apps. But at the same time, I'd
suggest that adding more ram later would be a good idea, as soon as the
budget constraints get a little better.

512 would be the normal recommendation, as long as memory prices are
reasonable.

Depending on the use? 256MB minimum, 512MB comfortable, 1024MB+ for gaming,
video or software development.
