I tried recently to recover from an o/s problem using the Win Xp Pro CD,
whilst it was in the drive it shattered, leaving me minus 1 windows cd, 1 cd
drive and no o/s. I rang Microsoft and the upshot was, "yes we can help we
will send another cd, but it will take approx 3-5 weeks". Anyway not wishing
to wait that long without a system, I borrowed a Win XP Pro disc from
brother, reformatted and did a clean install. The problem is that when I had
to enter the product key, I had to use his to get the system up and running
and the install completed.
My question is that because I own my own Win XP Pro disc and product key, is
there any way that I can remove his product key from my system and submit my
own? All help will be appreciated.

yes, there is a tool out there that will let you change to product key
stored in the registry. But why bother? If it let you activate ok then
you're set. Use your own key next time if you ever need to reinstall.

PS write down that other key for reference! just in case.

google for "change xp product key" if you want.

Hi,

When you get the replacement disk, do a repair installation using your
product key. Follow these steps to do a repair install which should preserve
your data, settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.
