Hi,

I have had an external drive for 2 years as N:\ but for some strange
reason when I booted up this time I got a new Hard Drive was found Panel
and the drive is now E:

How can I get it back to N: as it is a back up drive and all addresses
point to N:

Thanks

Do you have any ideas at all about what might be causing to happen? This
doesn't happen by itself. Without some help from you, we'll be taking
guesses.

How is this external drive connected to your computer? USB connections
do not produce a 'new hardware found' message.

Well that is strange then.

This is what happens..

Every other night I have True Image do a complete C drive to an external
Freeagent drive (always J:) This is connected via USB2

Also Every night I have the latest Syncback Pro do an update backup of
other folders and drives to the external drive which was always n:\

Today as I get to the office I notice that new equipment panel and then
in Explorer to check all updates went okay, noticed the change from n"
to E:. This is connected Firewire.

Other than than, nothing else went on as it was not near human hands.

Thanks,

rock

You have two external hard drives - one connected with USB and the other
connected with Firewire?

My apologies...I have never connected anything to my computer with a
Firewire connection, so I can't be of any help to you.

Don't know why it changed but it should be easy to change it back.

Right click on My Computer, left click on Manage, Disk Management. When the
Disk Management shows, find the drive in question in the lower right hand
box and right click on it. Left click on Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Select the drive letter desired and OK out.

If it changes again I possibly would suspect a power outage with the
computer rebooting and/or malware on the system although there may be other
causes. I have also had firewire hard drives lose their connection and had
to be reconnected during a file copy operation.

Thanks.

I just tried that and N is not in the list available. Really weird as
it was N.

I will disconnect it and the reconnect it to see if it changes anything.

Then turn the box off and on. I have only warm booted since the problem.

I report back

Thanks again

I turned it off (cold boot) and on again and now that CD drive went to E:.

I then turned the ext firewire on and it went to N as it should.

So that is okay but not sure what the other CD is.

It is not in Device Manager.

Thanks

Control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management.
Try right clicking the drive and changing the drive letter.

Have you added any new hardware to the computer like a printer, camera,
etc.? If so the new device probably has a flash memory device reader in it
and that may be your issue. If no new hardware has been installed try going
into the Drive Manager like I said before and examining for that device. Is
your DVDR drive still at "I" or has it changed?

Thanks again.

No I haven't recently added anything altho' a couple of weeks ago I
added and few things.

Explorer shows all drive names as they have been for a long time, even
tho' I have turned the box on and off a few times. So it looks okay now.

Yes you may be right may be a 'virtual' type thing as it does not show
in Disk Mgmt. So far it hasn't done anything to mess anything up and the
initial problem I had about the external going from N to E more than
likely was not related.

Thanks again.

Go to Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management and
re-assign the letter to that drive.
That's what I did when this happened to me.
