XP Pro HangUps

I've been running XP Pro for several months with no problems. Recently it
has begun to hang up in any of several programs (no response to mouse and
hourglass on.) I can launch the task manager, but it doesn't show anything
hogging resources and when I tell it to end the hanging task it frequently
just loops asking me if I want to terminate the non-responding task. If I
then try to shut down XP, it goes through the beginning motions but hangs on
the screen "Windows is shutting down" without completing termination.

I believe the problem started after I installed some software that also
installed Quicktime without my knowledge. I used add/remove to uninstall
both applications and then ran restore to a point prior to to the
installations, but I still have the above problem. I suspect a system app
got replaced during the above installation, but have no way of knowing for
sure.

Can anyone advise how I might track down the problem or what (short of a
complete re-install) I can do to return system stability?

Thanks for any assistance.

G'Day John,

Your descriptions suggest that Programs are 'resource bound',
but your use of Task Manager seems to eliminate this.

Another possibility is that that the program is being blocked -
usually by an anti-virus program.

Should you happen to be using Norton Internet Security 2004,
I suggest you uninstall it - completely.

I have had incredible HeartBurn with the NAV component -
slowing the System, removing SysTray Icons and blocking -
even Windows Update.

I rang Symantec and asked for a refund - expecting them to
escalate the resolution. They gave me the refund!!

I am now happily using McAffee!!

Should not be resource bound as you say. I do use Avast anti-virus, but
shuttting it down doesn't seem to help. Anyone have other ideas?

G'Day Again John,

Windows Xp optimizes its own Startup over a cycle of
3 to 4 reboot, Login (leave it for several minutes
after login) and reboot again - there is an unsupported
utility called BootVis, but I don't recommend it.

The point being that to test the AV software, it must
be disabled over this cycle - and that usually means
un-installing it.

If you decide to do this, please Post back the outcome!
