my XP Pro fresh install with NO appz hangs during early stages of boot (nothing but initial black screen) from a 'restart' or 'shutdown' from with XP pro. if i turn off power and wait about 2-3 minutes, it'll work as expected. it acts as if a bit needds resetting or there is a bad memory chip in my DDR PC2100 Registered ECC memory! any ideas

also as a bonus: why would a double click on a folder open the 'search' window and not open the 'open' window of the folder? if i right click and chose 'open' from the drop down menu it opens as it should. weird science

thanks, billy j

Hi Billy,

Yep, sure could be a ram problem. If you want to check the memory, there are
free programs here:

http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

But keep in kind that a thorough test can only be done with test equipment
at a computer shop. Software tests are not perfect in diagnosing these
issues. At the price of memory today, you may find that the test costs more
than a replacement stick.

As to the search problem, that is a known issue. MVP Doug Knox has a quick
fix for it here:

thanks for the replys
i have dtermined that it amy be registry or services related. waht is interesting is that after tweaking the services, etc. it runs great NO issues at all, BUT the firtst time i ran a XP Backup of the bare install less appz, it reverted back to the earlier problem of 'double click opens search NOT open of the clicked folder. after study, i noticed that it is happening becouse the default action of 'open' has been replaced by the action of 'seerach', 'open is 2nd in line not teh default action. make sense

now i can't make the default action change back by going into control panel>folder options>view>folder files and folders>advanced. when i cahnge the default action on the douible click, it appears to be seledted, but the default action change does not become active!!! why??

i have been fighting this for 2 daays now, round the clock. any ideas? please email me also about possible fix

thanks
