XP Pro hanging during start up

Hi all. During start up I first get the loading bar (briefly), then the XP Pro logo screen comes up (the three color bars run from left to right); gets about half way and stops.
Two items of concern and I am not even sure are part of the cause are !: Video drivers and or video card. When starting in Safe Mode, which loads ok until the /System32/drivers/ati(video drivers) file trys loading. The boot ops pause at this point more than usual. Then, after loading, the display doesn't have all settings availble; etc: 1600x1200 is unavailable. Also pointing me to the video card (or drivers) is the screen brightness had to be adjusted often during use the last few times of use. More so the gamma; I have an Adobe Gamma adjustment program for midtones. Would a video display card cause the system to hang; Windows not seeing the card? But then, there would be no video at all? 2: I added a second HD recently. The jumpers are set for it to be a slave and the system started normally the 3 to 4 times it was started since the slave was installed. The slave was quick formated and some back up program files were moved to it; no OS files on it. Boot OS remained on C:/
System specs: P4; 1.3GHz; 386 RAM; ATI 9700 Pro video card; Creative Audigy2 Sound Blaster; 350 Watts Power supply

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Did you try to uninstall the video display drivers and then reinstall them again. adjusting the gamma correctness will cause some odd behaviour with the performance of the drivers. So reinstall the drivers and use the default settings
