XP Pro doesn't log in

I have been using Win XP Pro for a while now. And recently it has started acting weired. Everytime I restart it comes to the log on screen and stays there for ever (after I log in of course). It doesn't log in AT ALL !!...I have to restart the PC almost 6-8 times before it logs in. HELP !!. I tried clearing the startups, and also scanned for errors and viruses, nothing seems to work. I defrag once a week, and DiskClean up, scan disk etc are also performed once a week.
 
Have been getting a similar problem. Sometimes the
pointer freezes at the 'Ctrl+Alt+Delete' screen.
Sometimes the cursor moves and I'll
press 'Ctrl+Alt+Delete'and get no response. I have a
feeling it might relate to internet explorer as I have
been having problems with it freezing and have had to
reboot.

Have you had any response as to what might be causing it?
Have you had similar problems with Explorer?
