i built my first pc 16 months ago.
ecs board
p4 3.2 ht
1.5gb ram
120gb maxtor hdd
bfg 6600 256mb 8xagp

for about 12mounths if i was using it for a long period of time or it was
just on it would crash occasionally. the more i use it the more it crashes.
running games (far cry, doom3, fear, even star craft, and red alert 2). i
noticed it more when i would be downloading music. i am runing norton system
works 05. never finds any viruses. but sometimes when it reboots after a
crash it would have an error message so i would report it to microsoft and it
would say its a driver issue. so i upsate all my drivers regularly and with
no improvement. i recenlty bout a 500 watt continues power power supply and a
new case with 3 120mm fans with no improvement. today i bought another maxtor
hard drive 200 gb ata 133 for additional storage because my other was full.
it is installed as a slave and max blaster 4 was used for the install because
of its size. now when i try to transfer files lfrom the 120 to the 200 that
are larger than 1gb it almost always crashes.
i intend to hool up my new media streamer to my home enterainment system to
stream movies and music and my pc is obviusly unstable PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

I am not sure if System Works 05 provides anti-virus function, but I am
almost certain that it does not provide firewall.

That means your computer may not be "totally" clean as you thought.

Would suggest the following based on my limited experiences:

(1) Do a full virus scan on your system if System Works provides anti-virus
function

(2) Download and install, Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search and Destroy and run a
scan on your system and see if there are something else there;

(3) Make sure there is no hardware conflicts from device manager

(4) Remove and install your device drivers

(5) Run Windows update and make sure you have all patches and updates

Hope this helps.

Try the forums and how to's here:
http://guru3d.com/
in relation to your 6600 video card. Many threads relating to lock ups and
blue screens with these and 6800 cards.
Similar issues for me several months ago resolved not with latest NVidia
drivers but from the card manufacturers latest drivers (similar build number
as NVidia but differing file size). Stable and high resolution/frames with
Halo, Doom3 and V8 2 for the last couple of months.

Also see xfiles suggestions re adaware and spybot, and add cwshredder.

I had a similar problem when i built my pc and ran my ram at too high speed.
In your bios, see if you can reduce the speed of your ram, and maybe cpu.
See how yo get on.

You might try doing a System Restore (START / ALL PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES /
SYSTEM TOOLS / SYSTEM RESTORE). Choose a date for which you know the system
was running OK.

BFG uses nVidia drivers--in fact they just send you to the nVidia site. So
if he's updated using the nVidia site, he's already got the latest, the only
choices would be to use archived drivers, or at a stretch, someone elses.

Take a look at your system log and see what the error messages are. Go to
the aumha site for info on what the bug check code means. When all else is
eliminated, you could have a motherboard problem; you might check to see if
you have any bad electrolytic capacitors (though you can't always tell by
looking).

Hello...

This sounds like its definitely a system issue, regardless of SW. If it
crashes while downloading music and playing games that doesn't necessarily
mean its a video card issue... (because if the video card was that it would
crash all the time).

You are using an ECS motherboard, since the days of the pentiums (classic)
the mighty ECS motherboard has been crappy - no matter what...

I would try this:

1. Reset bios to setup defaults, then don't change anything... (testing to
see if its a performance enhancement issue).

If that doesn't change anything...

2. Check the RAM that you are using and make sure its been tested by ECS
although the memory is probably not the issue - its definitely worth
checking.

Speaking of RAM have you tried different RAM in this system? Random system
crashes and BSOD's are frequently a RAM issue.

And last but not least...

3. Update BIOS from ECS Website, Be very careful to get the correct BIOS for
the version of your board, Many boards can look the same and they have
different BIOSES.

FYI: If you update with the wrong BIOS it will trash the M/B, you will have
to warranty the board back to ECS to fix it.

That is.... Be careful when updating bios this is almost always the last
resort...
