xp pro connectivity to 98se

I have recently tried to connect xp to a 98se computer
thru an smc router switch, no internet connection yet. I
followed all of the instructions but i don't have a stable
environment. 98 can use some of the file on xp, xp can't
see the c drive on 98. I can log-on some of the time,
some of the time not. strange.

What to do?
