New install, machine specs below.
Boots rapidly to desktop, but am unable to perform 'important' tasks,
(i.e. connect to Provider DSL and run netscape) for another 45-60
seconds.
Only functions enabled in msconfig are netscape fast start/norton
internet security and Norton antiVirus.
If it's the nature of the beast, I can accept it, just wondering if I
can speed things up a bit.
thanks in advance!

I have the same problem with mine ... i wait for more
than a minute so that it starts loading ...

my machine appears to do an inital "dump to the disk" soon after the
desktop appears, as the HD light glows for several seconds (5-10).
During that time the system only does "simple" things; it won't launch an
app or bring up the dialup connection if I try to launch 'em too quickly.
As soon as the HD access is complete things are normal. It is anyoying.
[I suspect it's the iconcache file being written, but am not sure.
immeadiately after boot up several large files have been updated,
iconcache and the registry hives among them. I assume one or all of
these are responsible for the activity. But, a write behind cache
should not lock the system! Yeah, I know, the reg hives ARE important...].

Is this what yours does? Does it last longer than the initial disk
activity? I'd love to know what it's doing. Seems some sort of semaphore
or event flag is being set that holds off certain ops until complete. A
sure sign of it is hovering the cursor over the taskbar, it'll turn to an
hourglass; move it off the taskbar and it immeadiately returns to an
arrow. Sometimes clicking a blank area of the taskbar seems to wake it
up. Seems Explorer is "busy...", which is why I suspect it's the
iconcache and not the reg hives. BTW my iconcache file is over 10 megs,
seems large to me...

BTW, do you/have you used the Cacheman utility by chance? I do, and
suspect it may play a role somehow...

Anyway, let's track this thing down, it's a pain!!!

Sounds like the same process as mine.
Yes, I have used that Utility, altho it it not loaded at startup.I
also have a Ram recovery program (FreeMem V4.43) that is enabled at
boot -Think I'll uninstall both and see- Let ya know!
regards
