XP Pro blank screen

Computer boots up to a blank screen; will boot in safe mode. The system
restore doesn't work. Sometimes the boot with network works, but sometimes
not or network will stop working in IE. I can't get a normal boot.

I've read all the other posts about this, but I don't know what to do next.
Can someone help an idiot?

Thanks Mark, I see the warnings, but I cannot back up to another drive as the
networking isn't, if you know what I mean. It is running XP from an install
in 2002, so I don't know if I have the right disk.

I will work through it and see what happens. I really don't want to lose any
data as it is my main server.

After reading the XP repair install, I am worried about using it. It is my
server and I have so many files...I'd had to lose them. I have searched ways
to get my back-up drive on, but the Safe Mode appears to block it from
connecting. Is there no better way?
