XP home would meet all your family needs... but Pro certianly isn't bad (just
more features/control of those features).

I think you'll really enjoy XP. During first time set up, you'll get to
create seperate user accounts. For home use, Fast User switching is cool.
You can switch to another user while your programs and documents are open,
but the other person using the computer won't see them. After you set up the
computer for the first time, log in as the user that is you, then set your
kids to "limited" user accounts, so they can't install software and such. Do
this in Control Panel > Users

It's really a synch, and is designed to be excellent for multiple users just
like what you want (need). I don't think you'll have any trouble at all.

With the Fast User Switching feature you will want to be careful. While it
is a cool concept, if one user has process intensive applications loaded,
when you switch to your user account, you will experience some degradation in
performance. How much largely depends on what the other user is running.

I'd suggest having the 13 year old do the work learning how to use Windows
XP Pro. Make him responsible for keeping the system secure and virus free.
That method should probably work out better for the safety of all concerned.
No security is proof against a determined misuser - might as well involve
potential misusers in planning and carrying out security as soon as
possible.

Windows XP does not come with a real reference manual. The best available
in depth reference is 'Windows XP Professional Resource Kit'. It weighs in
at about 5 pounds and can probably be had on sale these days for under $50
US. It is NOT for the faint of heart, nor the inexperienced; should be just
about right to keep your 13 year old out of trouble. (My family started
with one computer in 1982 and we eventually had one for each of the four of
us.) My daughter's middle school and high school had a wireless network and
every student and teacher had notebooks. By the time she was a freshman in
high school she was completely in charge of her computer. For my son,
computers were just something to use; he never took an interest in
management of computer systems.
