What I'd like to try and do is disable EXPORER.EXE as I use Powerdesk
to access drive and file info and do not have EXPLORER associated with
those functions. Maybe it would help with speed of access and release
a large block of memory.

Would disabling create any issues?

If I don't use it, what does it do sitting there taking up memory?

Appreciate any info on it.

If "PowerDesk" can completely sub-in for Explorer, sure.
Don't think it does though - if I know what product you are speaking of.

Explorer is (right now) everything you see. Your desktop is Explorer. You
Start Menu is Explorer. It's not just the "Windows Explorer you go through
your hard drives and cd drives and the likes with..."

;-)

It seems to me that when you install Powerdesk or if you look in its
program options it should be able to do that for you. These type of
programs would usually replace the Explorer shell at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Well I had not thought about its association with the desktop and
start menu. That escaped me when the thought hit me to ask about it.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for.

FWIW Powerdesk can be associated with other things beside windows
explorer but I see nothing in the documentation related to start menu
function and such things. Useful program with built in function for
opening, viewing compressed files and can preview most image formats.

I believe they are talking about Windows Explorer. Isn't Explorer the xp
shell ?

I am not the expert. You may be correct and that's why I had asked in
the first place.

Again, it is EXPLORER.EXE in the processes running in Task Manager
that I wanted to know about.. I guess if I just disabled it I'd find
out if it was needed in a hurry.

It doesn't hurt much - especially if you have saved everything and can
reboot anyway. In fact - it's sort of like a mini-reboot.

CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to bring up "Windows Task Manager" --> "Processes" tab -->
Find any/all "explorer.exe processes and "End Process".

You can start it back up (once everything disappears on you) using the
Windows Task Manager --> Applications tab --> New Task... --> explorer.exe.
