I upgraded XP Home to Pro. My internet connection is on the 2000. I had no
problems with conneting to the internet with XP Home. Now I can see each
computer and share files but I can't connect to the internet. I have TCP/IP
configured, client computer was added to the safe zone on my firewall.
Can't figure out why I can't connect. If anyone has an answer please let me
know.

run the Network setup wizard and choose: my computer
connects to the internet directly

dont worry you will still be able to see your workgroups,
if not then you need to install NetBEUI on XP

To have a network with computers running WindowXP Home and
WindowsXP Pro you need the NetBEUI network protocall
installed on all the computers running WinXP, once
installed you will be able to see other computers on your
home or office network, you can then share files, upload
and download files, delete files on there computers on
your network.

NOTE: NetBEUI is a extreamly low securtiy protocal and is
a temparay solution for networking computers because it
has NO security AT ALL, and Microsoft does not support
NetBEUI anymore. If you decide to install NetBEUI I
recommend connecting them to a ROUTER with a firewall
enabled on the router.

Once the NetBEUI driver is installed you must restart your
computer, then open network connection properties and
use "Install..." button to add NetBEUI protocol. Restart
your computer again and your set. Download NetBEUI below.

http://www.lvcm.com/cyberthug/netbeui/NetBEUIxp.exe

This is a WinRAR self extracting file that i created that
will install the NetBEUI drivers correctly into your
C:\windows\ folder ( some winXP windows folders are
C:\WINNT\ ) make sure you point the install to your
Windows system folder, if you donot trust this .EXE file I
created to make things simple then you can just change the
extention from .exe to .rar and use WinRAR to install
these drivers into YOUR windows folder.

Here are some tests to help find the problem:

1. On the 2000 host computer, go to a command prompt, run "ipconfig
/all", and check the settings for the local area network (not the
Internet) connection. They should be:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On the XP Pro client computer, right click the local area network
connection and click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the client
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

That's not the right Wizard setting. Since The XP Pro computer is an
ICS client, tell the Wizard that the computer connects to the Internet
through another computer on the network.

Barbara said that file sharing already works, so there's no need to
install NetBEUI. TCP/IP, by itself, is sufficient for her to share
files, printers, and an Internet connection.
