I have to say you need to find a different repair man. Anyhow most likely
your computer is infected with malware and spyware which will cause problems
when trying to install Service Pack 2 or problems in general. You can try to
use tools to remove malware/spyware but there is no guarantee that they will
fix your problem and intimately you may need to have your operating system
reinstalled by someone qualified or try it yourself if you feel up to it
with a bit of guidance. If you do try to reinstall your operating system be
sure to decrypt any files you have encrypted with EFS if you are using XP
Pro which would not happen unless you configured a folder to encrypt them.
Assuming you have an antivirus program be sure it is using the latest virus
definitions from the vendor's website and it should have a setting that you
can use to check that. If you are not sure or are using an old version of an
antivirus program you can download and install a free for personal use
program from AVG at the first link below. If you don't currently have a
spyware detection and removal program I suggest the free for personal user
AdAware SE at the second link below and it will prompt you to update it's
definitions during installation. After installing antivirus and spyware
program boot into Safe Mode and run both programs in Safe Mode. This may
take a while. Hopefully this will help. Be sure to read the last link at
Microsoft for Protect Your PC as it will explain the basics that you need to
do to protect your computer so you can learn what to do to minimize problems
in the future. It also contains links on what to do about malware and
spyware. --- Steve
