I am thinking of getting a laptop with WinXP Pro. Does IE 6 come as part
of XP Pro? The ad for the Dell computer does not mention IE.
TIA

If possible wait until January to place your order. Get a Dell notebook with
Windows Vista.

Yes, whether you want it or not. IE is described as a browser but
it's actually part of the operating system with some browser
capabilities grafted on.

You can however install a real browser and tell the system to make it
your default.

The hardware required to run Microsoft's newest OS, Windows Vista Ultimate
with Aero Glass is superior to that needed for XP Pro. Hardware component
upgrade choices are very limited in a notebook.

that still begs the question why? Why /should/ the OP /want/ to wait for
Vista? Maybe he doesn't /want/ Vista? I know /I/ don't.......

I don't plan to go to Vista either, but ... if I wasn't sure and I might do
so, and was buying a machine, I'd also think waiting was a good thing to get
at least moderately-guessed-at compatible hardware<g>.

Welll, IE is more than just a browser and is part of the OS. "IE" however
stands for "Internet Browser" and in fact provides the browser functions.

As for getting a "real" browser, that would more accurately be "another"
browser. In my experience, which is long and varied, IE properly configured
is still be far the most feature-rich and completely functional browser on
the market. In most cases in this day and age, it's not the browser that
creates the problems; it's the person in the cockpit.

Eh? Firefox beats IE(6 certainly) hands down for functionality and
customisability!

IE does the job, and does it well. I've never had any problems with it,
other than those I created myself.

"Why?" Latest hardware and drivers. Guarantied compatibility with new OS.
Given a choice, most people would want a up to date system over 5 year old
technology.

So that's why there are still MILLIONS of computers running Windows 98 then?

So that's why there are still MILLIONS of computers running Windows 98
then?

I would hope they stay off the Internet as Microsoft no longer provides any
incident support options or security updates effective July 11, 2006 for
Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related
components).

I'm sure MS-Dos has a user base also, but let's get back to the OP
question.

Other posters answered the IE question.

My reply: "If possible wait until January to place your order. Get a Dell
notebook with
Windows Vista."

The reason for this is simple, if at some future date Richard wanted to
upgrade to Vista it could be expensive or impossible because of the hardware
requirements. Example: 8 months ago I purchased a Dell Inspiron 6000 Media
Center Edition (WinXP Pro). By choosing integrated graphics I cannot upgrade
the video to run Vista with full features turned on.

You seem to be stuck on stupid and any reasonable explanation would be way
over your head.
