I am trying to network 2 computers with a crossover
cable. One is running XP PRO and the other is running
98SE.
I am able to ping both computers from one station to the
other, but they will not recognize eachother in any way
except that if the 98 is not turned on or is shut down,
the XP lets you know "a network cable is unplugged".
Otherwise, nothing.
Can someone help me with this? I've looked on
www.wown.com and www.practicallynetworked.com and
couldn't find any answers.
Thank you,
Carol

Have you installed the service "Client for Microsoft Network" over in the
Network neighbourhood?
Also when you do that, assign a user name and password and make the same in
your XP box
[provided you run NTFS on your XP]
then all is fine.
as there is nothing wrong with your hardware ... only the s/ware settings.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
