Group,

I am considering purchasing one of the new dual Xeon workstations that has
the 2 cpu's on one chip, effectively looking like 4 processors. Does XP Pro
run on this or would this require something special?

Thanks,
Mica

Nope, runs fine.

ASUS PC-DL / 2 ea 2.8 Xeon here.

Shows as four logical processors in Device Manager.

When you install, if you do a fresh XP Professional install, it should
detect both CPU's and be fine. If you are adding a CPU to an existing
system and it doesn't detect it on boot, you may have to install the
multi-processor HAL.

Actually,

I should have been more clear. I know that Hyperthreading is ok on dual
systems. I am interested in the new dual cpu die processors such as with
EM64T which do not use HT at all. Is there a difference to XP between two HT
Xeons and two EM64T dual die processors?

Thanks,
Mica

An option is one of the 4 processor Xeon boards. I need to get more crunch
power. Some of my jobs on a top P4EE now take over 2 hours.

Does anyone know how many CPU's XP Pro can take?

Two apparently.

I think you might want to look at a different operating system. One
thing to try would be to check with the makers of the programs you are
using to see what they recommend.

Unless your app has been written SPECIFICALLY
to take advantage of multiple processors, you MAY not see
much of a speed increase.

Just an FYI.

As a side note to all of this, while XP Prof can make use of the
multiple processors, Server 2003 would be a better option for
performance.

XP pro can use 1-2 processors same as NT workstation and 2000 Pro. Server
can be confiured to run up to 4, you will see no
noticable improvment with four vs two. I had dual 850 mhz PIII sys. for
quite some time - very nice to use, very smooth it did not
bog down with background task. Very little of the hour glass with everyday
task. If your apps are multi threaded (like Adobe Photoshop
or 3D Studio Max) it is possible to get up to 70-80% improvement with two
proc. more would not be used.

Server can support more than 4 depending on the version. Moving from 2
to 4 CPU's indeed does not benefit many home/SOHO users, but as a server
or a seriously high end workstation or mid level server, it can be
significant. The real problem is finding applications that have any
benefit in using multi-cpu systems.

I've run MS SQL Servers that show a 40% increase in some functions when
moving from 2 to 4 cpu's, and I've seen a seriously overloaded Exchange
2003 server benefit from moving from 2 to 4 CPU's, but not much else.

Thanks All!

My stuff is threaded and will benefit. I was really hoping to get a good
super duty workstation on XP.
