I'm an old win98 user in DEEP denial with XP. I had a really nice computer
built for me. The problem is which of those 40+ programs can i shut off? Gone
are the days when all we needed was systray, explorer, and two others I can't
seem to remember right now. I have one 512 mem stick and when I shut down my
games the computer has to sort of reboot itself. Cheese!!

Hi,

The chief difference you are seeing is that in WinXP you can see all the
background processes that were more-or-less hidden in the Win9x line. What
needs to be running? Nothing but system processes. Which are they? If you
don't recognize a process, google is your friend.

Here's a great resource.

It gives a pretty good idea of what you *may* be able to shutdown. I was
able to get rid of about a dozen running services on my laptop.

FWIW I'd make a list of any changes and keep it so that somewhere down the
road if you run into a problem with a new device or the like you can look
back and see what changes you made. For instance I didn't do any printing on
my laptop so I disabled some services related to printing. Later I got a
printer dock for my digital camera. It didn't work on first install so I
referred back to my list and had it going in a few clicks.
