Under control panel>system>advanced>performance>, I set the option to
maximize for cache instead of programs. What a disaster!!!

When I reboot, my desktop shows only IE and Recycle Bin and runs
nothing (saying it cannot find various dll files). I can't get to the
Control Panel to reset the option.

Suggestions???

Start machine. Repeatedly press F8 and see if you can start in Safe mode.
Change the performance tab back.
I think you may have other problems tho`.

I can start up in Safe Mode but still cannot access Control Panel (or
anything else). I think that the cache may have overwritten some
files. Is there a way to boot up and get a command line? That way I
could maybe copy some files onto an external drive before I reload
WIndows. Or maybe even run regedit.

Make a boot disk on the machine you're posting from, unless the
disk is NTFS. In which case go here to get a boor disk for NTFS;
http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm

If you can't make a boot disk you can always go here and download one;

The above site contains a description and instructions on how to build such
a disk. Creates a windows like environment and will boot regardless of file
system (as will Linux Live CDs).

Also, some Linux builds are bootable live DVDs (or CDs).

Either option will provide graphical file management tools.

I'm still interested in learning what happened to Questionmark's PC. What's
happening when you choose "maximize for cache" instead of "max for programs"
?
And why those problems???

me too - why put such an option in if it can cause such mayhem?

A while back, there was an issue with:

"large system cache" "ati driver"

This is Microsoft's politely worded advice...

"Things to consider before you enable System cache mode in Windows XP"

<insert expletive here>

Thanks, Paul.
Although written in MS language, the link explains clearly why not to use
system cache in a normal (non-server) environment.
