When bringing a laptop to work and adding it to a peer-to-
peer network, the computer names for the other computers
are visible for approximately five minutes, after which
they disappear and can only be seen using their IP. What
could be causing this and how do I fix it?

Thanks,

Steve

If the IP address is set to Auto Assign, try turning
on "Enable NetBios over TCP/IP". TCP/IP Properties,
Advanced, WINS.

I have found that if this is off not only can the XP PC
not browse the network (although drive mapping works OK)
but other PCs may not be able to browse either.

If the IP address is set to manual assign this problem
does not seem to arise, probably because Windows changes a
heap of setting between manual and auto assign.

Thanks for the advice. We tried it and it didn't solve
the problem. I guess I go back to the drawing board. If
anyone has any other ideas, I'm more than willing to try.
Thanks again.

Steve
