Hello all.

I have a new notebook that came without a CD but instead
has the RECOVERY partition on the hard disk that installs
XP initially. But I also need a W98 partition for old
software. Shrank XP (ok), created 70MB partition for DOS
for Partition Magic Boot Manager (still OK), and then
issued SYS from the booted DOS disk while its partition
(the 2nd on the drive) was active. Since then notebook
will not boot without help. Recovery partition does not
start (though I did not try marking it as bootable). (No
info on how it gets triggered, but it has few options
anyway short of full repartition.) Used PM's rescue
disks, but no improvement, although it lets me see the
partition tables and boot records. They all look OK, such
as one can tell without an earlier copy. Followed
Microsoft's 'Create boot disk' #305595 which allows boot
(showing some sort of problem with the boot loader
somewhere) and XP came up normally, but XP did not repair
the problem as it still fails without the floppy for boot.

Article implies that XP would address the situation, since
the floppy was to be used when such a problem occurs --
with no repair directions thereafter, what else would one
expect? However, I still need to solve the problem.
Ideas? What is corrupted? Articles sort of dance around
the issue, never quite defining what it is that is out
there in MBR and related-land. How does one acquire the
data that needs to be installed, and how does it get
installed? Is there a mis-match of # sectors or other
parameter that exists in either MBR or partition boot
record?

Thanks in advance,
Rick

contd..
also to repair fat table or boot partiton you can use
Command FIXBOOT command. for list of commands type /? at
the command prompts of reco very console

Again, I still do not have the XP CD. I tried the rest of
it, but winnt32 does not run /cmdcons because, it
says, "The installation source path specified to Setup is
invalid. Contact your system administrator." Further, if
this is to begin with the current boot record, then if it
is corrupted, this will not help. winnt32's help screen
seemed to be saying that it will copy the current MBR and
be prepared to restore it later.
