HI all can someone help me out on this ????? My Xp default sound is gone and
it is change into a program call MSNMsg.and now my xp start and shutdown
without the original sound just dead silence.

Where did my Sounds go?Restore System Sound: This generally happens when the Windows Audio Service does not stay started. This edit
resolves the issue.
See line 371: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Startup Sounds are missing:

TweakUI/General/Beep on errors (verify that the box is checked). http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

System Sounds are missing:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value
not set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

System and Application Sounds are distorted after running a game:

Boot into safe mode, shut down. Then boot normally.

How to Boot into Safe Mode:

You need to hit F8 during boot, just after the BIOS info switches to black screen.

Or...

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok, reboot.

Perhaps, but it may be something simpler than that. Open your control panel,
and using Classic view, double click on "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the
dialog that appears, click on the "Sounds" tab. Notice the list? scroll down
in the list to find the one you're searching for (in this case, "Start
Windows") once you find it, click on it to highlight it. Notice now that the
drop-down menu below this list changed to show a filename? (If there is no
speaker icon next to the item you clicked on in the list, the drop-down menu
will remain blank) Check to make sure that the filename you see in that menu
(before pulling it down) matches the name of the one that you want there. If
it doesn't, and you don't recognize the files in the menu, you may have to
browse to where they are located. By default, Windows XP looks for these
files at C:\WINDOWS\Media
