Hi,
I'm not sure if I have the correct forum because I"me not sure what the
problem is. It is online and a couple of different things are happening, I
believe because of security settings.I'm using XPHOme and IE6.0
One example : a secure site I'm trying to reach takes a full minute to load
a page. Not just the first page but any changing page. The site is fine from
other location but not mine.
Another problem/example signing into Adelplhia Powerpage site I get an error
message "Your session has timed out. Please login again"
This happens over and over. Adelphia support couldn't figure it out. I just
installed a wireless router, went to the next room and signed in fine w/
another computet, same internet connection. Confused, I am. Guessing it may
have set something in the Registry that I can't get rid of.

Any help is always greatly appreciated.

First insure that your computer is 100% virus and spyware free by going
through these steps:

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions;

2) remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
(www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com). These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html. I would
not install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there
are CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_cwsremoval.html. A combination of
HijackThis and About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in
removing homepage hijackers. Always read the instructions before
running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to update these programs before
running, and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode.
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options);

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

4) make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update;

5) run a firewall.

Malke,
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I've done them all, with no change. IE
is working fine at 100 different sites, and these two sites are fine from
different computers than mine so .......
I'm thinking it's a setting in the Registry but I don't want to go there
without guidance. I've tried everything I could see in shutting off XP
firewall , MacAfee firewall, every setting I could read about in Internet
options. I used IEFix and it ran , it also had me reload IE..... I"m just
lost and frustrated.

Any other ideas I could try.

Malke,
Now I'm more confused than before. I just went and redid all settings (I
didn't do spyware/adware steps), shut off the XP firewall, and the McCAffe
firewall and now the two problem sites are fine. I added settings and the
firewalls back one at a time trying to find the problem step but nothing.
Now I'm back to Internet Option settings and the two firewalls exactly as I
was originally and everything is fine!
Don't know what to tell the next person how I did it. In fact the one thing
is the login screen will not remember my username and password but
everything else it fine.
Thanks for your help.

!!! Whatever, I'm just glad it works for you now. And it certainly
couldn't have hurt to done the thorough cleaning. Maybe the login
screen "remember passwords" option (I assume this is at the secure
site) has been disabled by the webmaster for security reasons. In any
case, thanks for letting me know.
