Hello,

OK.. I just bought an XP laptop, and now I'm trying to
log onto the domain at our office. However, I am having
problems doing it.

On my XP machine I can log onto the workgroup that is
named the same as my domain, and then I am able to see
all the workstations, however when I try to log onto the
domain, I get the following error:

'A domain controller for the domain DOMAIN could not be
contacted.

ensure that the domain is typed correctly.'

and under the 'details' button it says:

'The domain name DOMAIN might be a NetBIOS domain name.
If this is the case, verify that the domain name is
properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain
name, then the following information can help you
troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the
service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a
domain controller for domain DOMAIN:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.DOMAIN

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include
delegation to its child zone:

DOMAIN
.. (the root zone)'

I am not able to ping the IP address of the server
either. The server by the way is a Windows 2000 Advanced
Server. All the workstations are Windows 2000 Pro, and
they are able to see the server and log onto it without
any problems. I do have an error in the event log of the
server that says something about DNS SRV. I'm not sure
if it has to do w/ the DNS service on the server. I
stopped the DNS service to see if that would solve
anything, but it didnt do anything.

I enabled NetBIOS on both the server and my new XP
laptop, but still I get the same error.

Also, I have another server that logs onto the domain, it
is a windows 2000 server as well, and it gives the same
error (it was on the domain before, but we took it off,
and just recently tried to log onto the domain again w/
it).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance!

The first thing you need to resolve is the inability
to ping the server by IP address.

Nothing is going to work untill this is resolved.

From a command prompt, do an 'ipconfig /all'.
Compare a good machine to the bad one.

Once you have got pinging working, ensure the DNS
setting on the XP box is pointing to only the server,
not to an external ISP.
