I have decided to upgrade my Compaq 1700 series laptop from ME to XP. I installed XP and made all the updates, but the computer is extremely slow. When I tried to run a DVD it was so slow the video and audio were very fragments to a point where you could not watch it. I'm very disappointed and not sure where to go from here.

Franklin, you need a lot of Ram for WinXP. Minimum of 256 best 512MB.

Have you checked for viruses, trojans, adware and spyware? Is your laptop, I'm not familiar with Compaq's, capable of running such demanding applications as a DVD player? Windows XP will suck up a chunk of memory and processor power just running.

Hi Franklin,

CPU speed?
Physical RAM installed?
Available hard drive space?

I think my CPU speed is 600 MHz
The data I have available says my cache is 256 KB and my system memory is
64MB DRAM.
Available hard drive space is 4.89 GB.
Help.

Increase your RAM to the maximum, 64 MB is very little, 256
is a good minimum number but 512 is better. With only 64 MB
you're swap file is being used 100% of the time and you have
a small hard drive which is probably a slow laptop drive.

Also, be sure you get all the XP drivers for the laptop.
These are often not the common drivers because laptops are
proprietary. Goof luck.

In
and my system
memory is 64MB DRAM.

That's the answer to why XP is very slow. 64MB meets the minimum
requirements, but is way too little for decent performance for
anyone. Good performance starts around 256MB.

"Goof" luck? <g>

Franklin also emailed me privately, I responded similarly. Too little ram to
expect decent performance.
