Changed the hard drive on a Dell running XP Pro. Used WD's drive install diskette to copy failing drives content. (Failing drive was a Maxtor - replacement a Western Digital) - Had to do a Windows Repair fom CD to get system to boot. All programs run OK and "disk warning" dosen't appear but (BUT) The system hangs at "Welcome" as described in 816873 and Alt-Tab reveals "No Paging File, or Too Small" as described in 316528. Neither of these Articles corrected the problem. Anyone got suggestions? jb

First - drive copy using WD's software will most likely fail all the
time...you'll get their tech support to admit that very easily.

I think it's a problem with the drive letters - there's a specific
procedure that needs to be followed in cloning drives and replacing the
old one with the new. If I'm not mistaken you have to copy, but not boot
with both drives after the copy. You have to remove the old drive, set
the new one as master and only then boot up the system so that the new
drive gets the same letter (perhaps C:) assigned to it and the paging file
can be found on C: instead of D: or whatever other letter is used when
both drives are in the system.

Anyway, there are other causes for this problem too, as you have seen on
MS's KB. Good luck and followup to the newsgroup. When I had this
problem I just reinstalled the system completely and copied the important
data from the old drive to the new. Don't forget to backup email,
favorites, cookies, etc.
