Hello,
I have an IBM T30. Just installed a brand new toshiba HD in it. Thought
I could simply boot from CD rom with my Windows XP cd, but no. For some
reason it says "failure, cannot find an operating system"

Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

You need to first configure the laptop, from within the BIOS, to boot
from the CD; it's clearly trying to boot from the blank hard drive.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
