XP not communicating with router

Win XP Pro SP2. I have 2 machines which until today have happily accessed
the internet via a Netgear adsl router. Now my main PC is not able to
access the internet at all. Neither is it able to access the files on the
other computer via the router. The other computer continues to access the
internet perfectly well via the router. I've tried swopping ports and it
makes no difference. The laptop can access via any port on the router, and
the desktop can access via none.

When I ping the ip address, I get this message four times:
PING: transmit failed, error code 5

My isp tells me that my router is connected (which of course I know because
of my other machine being connected) and that it seems my PC isn't seeing
the router. I've tried rebuilding the ip stack using the cmd netsh int ip
reset c:\resetlog.txt The log tells me all the things which were reset, but
it hasn't solved the problem.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and more importantly what might put
it right?! Just please don't suggest System Restore....
Thanks
Jeff

Disconnect the cable from the router, unplug the power
to the router, wait 2 minutes, reconnect the cable to the
router, then return power to the router.

Thanks Carey. In my frustration last night I omitted to say what I had
tried already - which included your suggestion. Anyway - if the other
computer is accessing succesfully via the router, surely this can't be
expected to correct the problem with the main PC?
I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet adapter, with
no success. Any suggestions? Thanks

My first guess is you lost your NIC. They do die. Double check that the
IP address on your computer is in the same network as the router and other
computer. If it is, then try pinging your own computer's IP address. There
are other options, but if you have a spare NIC, I would give it a try (you
are
sure the cable is OK right?) If you are using DHCP, you might try a static
IP in the right range, but I don't think that will help much. If you are
using
DHCP and the address on your machine is that funny one 169 something,
that is another indication that either your card has died or open connection
to the router (assuming other machines using DHCP are getting their address
OK.
