i have XP and have for the last 4 years used Norton IS along with Ad-Aware
and spybot SD. I am thinking of upgrading to Vista, my question is, after
hearing so many bad things about Norton recently, would the Windows Live One
Care be a good replacement for Norton? would it give me at least the same
level of protection as Norton? also as i am thinking of upgrading to Vista
Premium is this operating system really so much more secure than XP?
kind regards.

The Windows Live OneCare antivirus is junk. Recommended antivirus
programs are NOD32, Kaspersky, Avast or AntiVir for free ones. I find
the built-in Vista Firewall to be adequate for our needs.

I run XP on 2 machines and Vista Home Premium on a laptop.
At the present time I would stick with XP........the laptop was a free
upgrade to Vista. There are still quite a few problems with Vista which
should be solved in about 6 to 12 months...then I would not mind spending my
hard earned money on an upgrade...Vista Ultimate.
As for Anti Virus....Norton is over bloated and as Malke mentioned there are
better ones.Take a look at the June edition of PC World and you will see the
ratings of the various Anti Virus that they tested. The Vista Firewall is a
nice change from the XP firewall but for the average user it is hard to
configure properly...I still like ZoneAlarm and they now have a "Suite"
which includes an Anti Virus.
here is a website that compares Anti Virus so you can make an informed
decision

Windows OneCare is certainly not the brightest bulb in the box. I have it
running for testing purposes on a virtual machine running XP, but I
certainly wouldn't put it on my Vista partition. Any Norton product wouldn't
even get anywhere near my machine either.

Personally I would much prefer the free versions of Avast (www.avast.com) or
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com) to cover your anti virus needs. As for a
firewall - well Vista's own does a pretty good job. I certainly haven't
changed the firewall on my machine.

Don't pay for One Care. It isn't worth it. If you want to pay, get NOD32.
Avast is free for personal use.
