I downloaded a free antivirus and then deleted the items
it said were virus. Big mistake! The deleted files were
files that start your computer and allow you to end
properly. Upon starting ,it sends me to a black scrren
that asks me what version of Windows I want to run. When
I want to quit session, I can click "start", then "turn
off computer", then click "turn off " but it doesnt turn
off ! I have to turn off manually. I screwed up big time,
what do I do now? I dont know what files I deleted, and I
ran the windows re-install upgrade. Will re-installing
windows bring it back to normal? What do I lose?

And what was the name of the free antivirus you installed? You may be able
to help others here.

Also what were the file names identified as viruses? I'd almost bet they
were indeed bugs, and they sabotaged the startup routine. Removing them
triggered more problems.

Simply running an antivirus software and removing the infecting files is not
always enough to clean a system. Often they have other bits behind that can
cripple a system if the bug is not removed properly. I recall one Win9x bug
that placed an entry in autoexec.bat to format C:\ if the infecting file was
not found at boot. If you didn't remove the line as well as the file, the
first time you rebooted you wound up with an empty hard drive.

If you are lucky, the A/V software logged the file names of the files
it deleted.

You may be able to use SFC to restore just these files.
