We have two computers, both running xp, we are connected
to a router, which is connected to a cable modem. I can
see her computer in my workgroup, but she can't see mine.
How do I correct this problem

How do I correct this problem

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on a
local area network connection -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Steve,

You will have to make two more links to this list, if you don't have them
already.

1. The workgroup should be same for all computers.
2. In the Properties window of a folder, in the 2nd frame name "Network
sharing and security", I had the text something like "As a precaution,
Sharing is diabled on this machine. To share files etc. run Network Setup
...." with two check boxes, one disabled. Here after I was able to access
folders on my XP Home computer from other computers on the workgroup.

I was watching this newsgroup only for the past two days to find answers for
my woes. It appears that many many many were facing same problem as I was,
because of one reason I think: Windows XP is expected to simplify things. It
did simplify many things. Probably this one aspect was not for obvious
reasons - security. But it took about 10 days for me after playing with
computer for 30+ years. This aspect should be more user friendly.

To check on my woes, please look at my reply to a posting on 12/26/2003.

ThanQ...

1. The workgroup should be same for all computers.

Using the same workgroup name on all computers makes networking a
little easier, but it isn't necessary. A computer in any workgroup
can access a computer in any other workgroup. To access another
computer, no matter what work group it's in, type its name in the
Start | Run box preceded by two backslashes:

\\computer

I frequently say to "run the Network Setup Wizard to fully enable file
sharing", but only when it's apparent, from the problem description,
that it's needed.
