Hi,

I used to be able to see win2k machines from XP and vice
versa but now they don't appear so I cannot share files.
The odd thing is...I can ping each machine from the other
and they are in the same network, the workgroup is just
that 'workgroup' and I can use the web and shared
printers on the xp server.

Any ideas? I do remember seeing something on the web
which said that this was an XP bug.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Did you try the 3 things that I suggested, Bill? If so, did they have
any effect?

Here's another thing to check: run "ipconfig /all" on XP Home and
look at the "Node Type" at the beginning of the output. If it says
"Peer-to-Peer", that's the problem. In that case, run the registry
editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't solve it, we need more details to diagnose the
problem.

What exactly does "see the workgroup but not access to shared
resources" mean? How does XP Home see the workgroup? How do you try
to access the shared resources? What exactly happens when you do it?
If there's an error message, what does it say?
