Hi
I have a Windows XP Home OS trying to network into/to a
Windows 98. The networking is perfect, except, I cannot
send files from XP to 98. Vise Versa is possible. Also,
I am able to control the 98 OS with XP using VNC -
virtual private networking software. Again, using
software, I can control the 98 machine, but when I try to
look at the 98 through Networking, I get an error telling
me that I don't have authorization and network path
cannot be found. I am the only user of the computer and
I am set as the Admin. There is a netboui patch offered
for XP, and I'm wondering if I need to install it. I was
not given a Windows XP disk with my computer, so I am
unable to install the modification as the web directs us
to the CD. Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shane,

Did you successfully ping Win XP from Win 98 and vice
versa? I have observed a strange behavior where I can
ping my Win 98 notebook from a Win XP notebook. The
ping test from the Sony Win98 notebook to WinXP HP
notebook has consistent timeout failure. It is even
stranger because both can communicate with any other
host in a six-router internetwork and the Internet.

I would appreciate your sharing any relevant solution.
Thanks.

Hi CNG,
Thanks,
I am able to ping from 98 to another 98 and the XP, but
not from the xp to the 98's.

Also, it could have to do with netboui not being on the
xp. Check out the following article:

us;301041#Task1

I don't have an XP CD, so I can't do it. If you get it
to work using the files, please let me know and or try to
send them to me. Thanks!

You don't need NetBEUI on your network. Nothing in Windows networking
has ever required NetBEUI.

The error message that you're getting really only means that
something's wrong with the network. It might have nothing to do with
authorization or permissions.

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.

Shane,

Thanks for the URL. I checked it out.

I don't think NetBEUI protocol is required for IP
communication like a ping test between two IP hosts.

Do you have all three hosts on same IP network?
It is rather strange you can ping WinXP from Win98
while I can ping Win98 from WinXP and in both cases
the reverse fails.

I will keep you posted if I learn anything.
Good luck.

Steve and All-

Pls see my (similar) post called "Cand see XP machine on
home network" I checked the network card on my HP
running Win98, and it is using NetBEUI. I found the tab
under network card Properties that allows you to enable
NetBIOS, but it is grayed out and doesn't allow me to
change it! Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Peter
