Just bought a new laptop with XP; thought the home network
would be easy. It isn't. The laptop and a desktop with XP
are both connected through ethernet cables to a 4 port
router. The router connects to the Internet through a DSL
modem. Both computers have separate IP addresses (in the
192.168.0.xxx range) and both recognize the router and can
access the Internet with no trouble. Running the network
wizard on both hasn't worked - neither one sees the other
computer on its list of network places. I'm out of ideas -
any help would be appreciated. TIA.

What option did you pick when the Wizard asked how the computers
connect to the Internet? Its choices aren't very well defined, and
it's easy to go astray.

The right answer is "through a residential gateway", which is what it
calls a router.

If you told it "through a network hub", the Wizard enabled XP's
built-in firewall, which blocks file and printer sharing. If that's
the case, run the Wizard again.
