XP Networking problem

I have lived with this problem for a long time, and figured it would never be
resolved, until, that is ,I found this forum, so hopefully dsomeone can help.

1 Desktop connected to the wirelss router via its USB port
1 Lap Top connected to the same router wirelessly.

All good. As stand alone machines they do everything that they should as such.

However........I cannot get them to communicate and share access with each
other.

On the Laptop I can 'see' the desktop in 'my computer', but it tells me I
dont have permission to access it. Likewise the external Hard Drives
connected to the desktop appear on the laptop 'my computer' but are
inaccesible.

On the Desktop PC , I cannot see the Laptop or any of the external Hard
Drives connected to it in 'my computer'.

I hope this is a clear and concise summary of the problems, I am happy to
give more details if I am told what to give, and any suggestions as to what
is going on would be appreciated.

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

Hi Jack, Thank you. I have done what you suggested (I think), The windows XP
generic firewall is switched off on both machines, and I have turned the AV
software to 'Full Trust' (Nortin IS 2009) on both machines.

Still nothing.

The laptop PC does not appear in the desktop PC 'my computer'
and the desktop PC appears but is not accesible on the laptop 'my computer'.

I would be gratefull for any other suggestions.

Regarding the 1 external hard drive connected to the laptop via USB and
visible but not accessable on the desktop PC......

I am getting a message ' Not enough server storeage to process this command'.

What can I do?

I would like to piggy-back onto this thread. I'm having a similar problem. In
my case I had successfully networked an XP Pro and XP Home machine. I had
indications that the hard drive on my XP Pro machine was reaching the end of
its life, so bought a new hard drive and reinstalled from scratch. I pulled
out the instructions I used to make this work the last time, but they haven't
solved the problem this time. To summarize, both computers have the NetBEUI
protocol, TCP/IP is configured to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, the net user
guest account is active, I created a network setup disk on the Pro machine
and ran it on the Home machine, and I went into the Group Policy Editor on
the Pro machine to disable the Accounts:Limit local account use of blank
passwords to console login only. I have tried toggling the simple file
sharing on and off to no avail. From the Home machine I can see the folders
I've shared on the Pro machine, but when I try to access them I get the
message that the folders are not accessible, that I may not have permissions
to use the resource, and the message "Not enough server storage is available
to process this command". This all worked before, so I'm pretty certain the
problem is a configuration setting somewhere, but I haven't found it. What is
really frustrating is that yesterday, for a short time, I thought I had it
working (e.g., I could access my genealogy file on the Pro machine from the
Home machine), but when I turned the computer on this morning I was back to
this problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I did some further digging in this forum and found a thread on 8/5 that
seems to have solved my problem. The server storage issue appears to be
related to the IRPStackSize value in the Registry. KB177078 explains how to
access the registry to change or create this value. I had to create it. The
article implied the created DWORD would have a default decimal value of 15,
but mine was blank. I tried 15, which didn't work, so followed their advice
and bumped it by 3, up to 18. I don't know if it will still be working the
next time I fire up both computers, but after that change the message no
longer appeared and I was granted access to the shared files on the XP Pro
computer.
