I am trying to troubleshoot to find out what has caused a
network problem. (The computer connected via ethernet can
still access internet thru linksys router, and see other
computer on network. however, other computer connected
wireless to router cannot access internet, although the
status for wireless connection shows excellent signal
strength. It has no IP address and gets error message
'failed to renew IP address' when trying to repair
connection. Interestingly, I get the same error message on
the host computer.
A secondary problem I inadvertently created was to run
network setup wizard again on the ethernet connected
computer; now the router 'sees' this computer TWICE on the
DHCP client table with two IP addresses (the right one
ending in .101, and the new wrong one .102). when I run
ipconfig on the ethernet connected pc it shows the wrong IP
addy .102.
Help, please! Thanks a lot

Hi there,

This sounds like the exact problem that is happening to
me. I have the post called connection problem a few down
from your message. I have no idea what happened and
nothing, even rolling the computer back one day, has fixed
it. Do you have cox isp by chance? It happened all of a
sudden this morning.

When you say "It has no IP address" do you mean it's something in the
range of 169.*.*.* ? or is it 0.0.0.0

Two tests:

1. Hook up the same computer with a wire and see if it works.
2. Then try wireless, and this time assign assign a static IP and see if
the configuration works.

Do you have patch 826942 installed on your XP box? If you do, you have to
make sure that your hardware is WAP capable, or you will have to upgrade
the firmware on your router and card. If your hardware is not WAP
capable, remove the patch if the issues it fixes don't affect you.
