Can someone help, please...

I am trying to network 3 laptops and 1 desktop all on
windows xp home. They are connected wirelessly and share a
broadband internet connection through a gateway. It is all
done with DHCP. I can ping all machines from all machines
fine. I have run the netwok wizard on all of them. I had
to enable Netbios on all machines to get the desktop to
access the workgroup. All laptops can access all all
machines (including desktop) over workgroup. All can get
into shares (including those of desktop) and printers.

However, when trying to access any machines or shares from
Desktop over workgroup I am told that I may "not have
permission to access network resource". As far as i can
tell it is all set up fine. All Xp firewalls are off.
There is a firewall on the desktop, but i have opened the
relevant ports. I tried disabling it altogether, but
didn't make a difference.

Any ideas, please!

The basics are that both machines need to be on the same
workgroup and have the same subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
The XP firewall should be disabled on local area
networks. It's only for direct connections to the
Internet. Since you have mentioned there was a firewall
and you disabled it, the next thing you can do is
completely remove the firewall altogther and see if that
fixes the problem.

Eric,
I have a similar problem. I have 3 computers, 2 running
WinXP Pro, one desktop and one laptop, and one desktop
running Win98SE, all connected to the internet via a
dlink router. From the WinXP desktop, I can access the
other computers, but I CANNOT access the desktop from the
other 2. If I disable the firewall, will I be opening the
XP desktop to the internet? I just want to be able to
access it from my other 2 computers in the peer to peer
nw. Can you advise? Thank you,
Gregory Du Bois

Yes, you are when you disable any firewalls. You are
opening your machine to the Internet just temporary. The
XP built-in firewall should be disabled on local area
networks as it's only intended for direct connections to
the Internet. When troubleshooting networks, it's always
a good idea to remove all firewalls until you get it
working. If you want to use a firewall, I suggest
products from ZoneAlarm, Norton, or Sygate.

Make sure that you do enter a password when you log in to
your desktop. If you have setup an account on the desktop
that does not require you to enter password, the xp home
machines will not allow you to connect to them even if you
have the same user account setup on all machines. I had
the simular problem before and it was resolved once I gave
my user account a password. For some domb reason, the xp
home would like to have a user name and a password over
the network to allow network recources to be shared.
