XP networked at one location trying VPN to other location

As stated in subject. The biggest problem is that when I connect to the VPN, I can no longer browse the internet, example, check email or use IE without getting page cannot be displayed error. If I disconnect from the VPN, then I can browse the web once again. The problem is that some fo the software that I am running requires acces to my remote location and the web both at the same time. I have set things up and using the same user ids and passwords on a windows 98se machince and everything works fine
